Types of Hair Extensions

The first step in getting wedding hair extensions is to choose the right type. There are a few different kinds of hair extensions to choose from, each with its own pros and cons. Here's a quick overview of the most popular types of hair extensions to consider for your wedding day:

Clip in hair extensions

Clip-in hair extensions are some of the most popular types. They're relatively affordable and easy to apply and remove, which makes them a great choice for brides who want to DIY their hair extension application.

One downside to clip-in hair extensions is that they don't always stay put as well as some of the other types on this list. If you go with clip-ins, be sure to use enough clips (usually six to eight) and space them out evenly to ensure that they stay in place all day long.

Tape hair extensions

Tape-in hair extensions are another excellent alternative for brides. They are attached to the scalp with a strong adhesive, with your natural hair sandwiched between the extension pieces. Although we recommend getting a hair stylist to install your tape-ins (especially for a wedding day), they are generally fairly easy to put in and typically won't damage your own hair if installed correctly.

Tape ins are usually single-use. One application lasts about two to three months - but if you care for your extensions well, they can be removed and reapplied for another round. If you choose tape-ins, you won't have to add hair extensions on the day. Or end up with the bulky/heavy feeling that can sometimes occur when wearing a lot of clip-in extensions. The last thing you want is bulky wedding hair with visible extensions!

Micro ring extensions

Micro ring and micro loop are other popular hair extensions and great for thin hair as they tend to be gentler than some other types. They are installed by threading small silicone rings or loops through your natural hair and attaching the hair extension strands to those rings or loops.

These hair extensions can last up to four months with proper care, making them an excellent option for brides who want longer-lasting results. They're also less likely to damage your natural hair than other hair extensions on this list. However, they can be tricky to apply yourself, so we recommend leaving this one to the professionals.

Keratin bond/fusion hair extensions

Keratin bond or fusion hair extensions are attached to your natural hair using keratin-tipped strands that are fused with a hot tool.

These types of hair extensions tend to be on the pricier side. Still, they're also one of the longest-lasting options available—they can last up to four months with proper care. They're also less likely than clip-ins or micro ring/loop extensions to cause damage to your natural hair because they don't require harsh chemicals or adhesives.

However, like micro ring/loop extensions, these can be tricky (and even dangerous) to apply yourself, so we also recommend a professional application for your wedding day.

Halo hair extensions

Halo hair extensions are a great made-to-order option for the bride who either already has long hair and wants to give her stylist lots of hair to work with for undone hair, needs specialist colour matching (we offer a free colour matching service too!), or for the bride with fine hair who needs hair extensions for extra length, thickness and volume to achieve her ultimate wedding hairstyle.

NB. If you choose halo hair extensions for your wedding hair, be mindful the halo hair extension is a custom option, so you will need to allow plenty of time for delivery. We recommend ordering at least three weeks before you trial your wedding hairstyle.

Once you've chosen the type of extension right for you, it's time to start thinking about how you will care for them. Depending on the type you choose, there may be special considerations when it comes time to shampooing, conditioning, and styling your new hair extensions, but don't worry; we'll fill you in on all the details.
