How to Care for Butterfly Weft Extensions: The Complete Guide

You've made the call, booked the stylist, and walked out with the best hair of your life. Now comes the part that actually determines how long that lasts.

Butterfly wefts are one of the gentler, lower-maintenance extension methods out there - but "lower maintenance" doesn't mean no maintenance. A little consistency goes a long way toward getting the most out of your investment.

Here's everything you need to know.

Washing

Less is more here. Aim to wash your hair two to three times a week at most. Unlike your natural hair, the weft itself doesn't produce oil from the scalp - so you're mostly washing to keep your roots and natural hair clean, not the extensions themselves.

When you do wash:

Always brush gently before getting your hair wet. Wet tangles are harder to deal with than dry ones.

Use a sulphate-free, paraben-free shampoo. Sulphates strip the hair and can loosen the microbeads over time. Focus the shampoo on your scalp and roots rather than scrubbing down the full length of the weft.

Apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends only - keep it away from the beads and the root area. Leave-in or oil-based products near the attachment points can cause slipping.

Rinse with lukewarm water. Hot water is hard on both the hair and the beads.

Gently squeeze (don't wring) excess water out with a microfibre towel and allow the hair to air dry where possible. If you're using a blow-dryer, keep it on a lower heat setting and always use a heat protectant.

Products to avoid: Sulphate shampoos, clarifying formulas, heavy oils near the roots, 2-in-1 products, and anything with silicone buildup.

Brushing

Use a loop brush or extension-safe paddle brush - not a regular bristle brush, which can snag the weft. Start at the ends and work upward toward the roots in sections. Never start from the root and drag down, especially when hair is wet or tangled.

Brush gently two to three times a day to prevent matting, and always brush before bed.

Heat Styling

Good news: butterfly wefts are 100% human Remy hair, so you can straighten, curl, and blow-dry them. Just treat them like your natural hair at its most fragile.

Heat protectant spray is non-negotiable. Keep your tools under 180°C where possible, and avoid clamping directly on the beads or the weft itself. The hair can't repair itself the way your natural hair can, so a little care with heat tools pays off significantly over the lifespan of the extensions.

Sleeping

This is where a lot of damage happens without people realising. Before bed, loosely braid your hair or tie it in a low ponytail to prevent tangling overnight. A silk or satin pillowcase is worth it - the reduced friction makes a noticeable difference in how your hair looks and feels in the morning.

What to Avoid

Swimming. Chlorine and saltwater are both damaging to the hair and can loosen the microbeads. If you're going in the pool or the ocean, the extensions should come out first. Your stylist can advise on the best approach.

Tight hairstyles. Constant tension on the attachment points can stress your natural hair over time. High, tight ponytails or slicked-back styles worn daily are worth avoiding.

DIY maintenance. If your beads feel loose or are slipping, book in with your stylist rather than attempting to fix them yourself. Getting it wrong can damage both the extensions and your natural hair.

Maintenance Appointments

Most people need a move-up appointment every 6 to 8 weeks as the natural hair grows. Leaving it longer than that means the wefts sit lower, become more visible, and can start to cause tension at the root. Keeping on top of these appointments is genuinely the single biggest factor in how long your extensions last and how good they look throughout.

Treat the maintenance as part of the investment, not an optional extra.

Butterfly weft extensions can be reused across multiple installs when cared for properly - that's what makes them good value over time. A little routine care, the right products, and regular appointments are all it takes. Ready to shop the range? Explore Medusa's Butterfly Wefts here.
