How long your hair extensions last depends significantly on your care regime and lifestyle. Clip-in extensions will last longest as they’re not usually worn daily and require less frequent washing. Average use of our more permanent methods including tape hair and micro-ring, is 2-6 months. However, some customers get up to one year use from our extensions following our care advice.
Here are our top three things to avoid this summer if you want your hair extensions to last longer.
Perming
We don’t recommend it, but you can perm your hair extensions. It will affect how long your extensions last.
For wavy hair, the wave is already permed into the hair when you purchase it. These processes can be a little harsh on the hair, and for that reason, we don’t recommend further perming, but you can do it. They won’t last as well or as long.
Swimming With Extensions In
Swimming or showering, with extensions clipped into your hair, is asking for trouble! Likewise, sleeping with extensions in, if the extensions become tangled with your natural hair while they’re wet, it can be difficult, damaging and painful to remove them. You can still lay on the beach or hit up the pool with extensions in, but make sure you braid your hair or keep it tied up high to avoid making contact with the water.
Bleaching Or Colouring Lighter
Without any natural oil from the scalp to create lubrication on the extensions like your natural hair, bleach will significantly dry out your hair extensions and shorten their lifespan.
We are often asked whether or not Medusas can be dyed. The short answer is yes, but it is best to choose a colour as closely matched to your hair as possible so that colouring is not needed. However, since our extensions are made of human hair, you can colour them.
If you need to colour or tone the hair, it’s best to use a semi-permanent dye as these are much more gentle. You can use a permanent colour to go darker; however, it will reduce your extensions’ lifespan. Always perform a small test first. Medusa will also not refund on a product that has been toned or coloured, resulting in an undesirable effect or hair condition, so bear this in mind when you choose your hair. We are always here to help you choose the right colour to match your hair.
And there you have it. Other things will also reduce the lifespan and condition, like sleeping in your extensions, not storing them properly, using too much product and not washing and conditioning. If you’re buying extensions for the first time, it pays to do your homework well, so you don’t waste your money.
