Fishtails braids look gorgeous when done well. They’re even more divine with long, thick hair, which is where your hair extensions will come in handy to help get that lovely, voluminous, textured ‘tail’. They can also take some practice to look just right, and be time-consuming, both of which might put a novice off the idea of even trying to attempt the sophisticated looking ‘do.
Faux fishtails are an easy alternative that look just as great as a regular fishtail braid, are quick to do, and simple to learn. In fact, they require a total of zero braiding, all you need is some hair elastics. Follow these instructions, and get the beautiful effect of a fishtail braid anytime you like, in next to no time at all.
To start, you’ll need a few hair elastics that are the colour of your hair, or clear. You want them to be as invisible as possible for this hairstyle.
Step 1: Tie your hair off in a low pony.
Step 2: Pull the hair apart to make a small hole just above the elastic.
Step 3: Flip the pony up and thread it through the hole, then pull it down again. If you think you need to, as you go, tighten the elastic and fluff the braid up a little.
Step 4: Tie a hair elastic a few centimetres below the first elastic, make another hole just above it, and loop your hair through the hole again, pulling it down once more.
Step 5: Repeat this process until you’re satisfied with the length of the fishtail along your ponytail.
Step 6: Pancake the faux braid by pulling at it with your fingers to widen and flatten it, making it bigger and messier, and also to hide the elastics.
