Whether you’ve decided your current stylist simply isn’t working out for you any more, one of you has moved, or they’ve cut back hours meaning you can never get an appointment, finding a new hairstylist can be super stressful. 

I mean, it’s your hair! 

Fortunately, there are a few simple things you can do that will guarantee the next time you go to somebody new, you’ll be walking out of there a shiny, happy customer: 

  1. Ask other people you know with great hair who their guy or girl is. Even if it’s somebody walking by you on the street. Your friends will want to help you out, and as a general rule people love talking about their hair, even to people they’ve just met. Think of word of mouth as one of the best free referral services available. 
  1. Search social mediaSearch hashtags for what you’re looking for on Instagram to get as particular as you wish (for example, #balayage or #yourarea+hairstylist), and then when you’ve found suitable candidates, stalk their website and Facebook page to get a feel for their work.  
  1. Book a consultation. It’s completely within your rights to ask for a ten to fifteen-minute consultation with any hairstylist. If they won’t agree to do this for you, take it as a warning sign and walk away. During this discussion you can ask them anything you want, the general idea being so that you can get a feel for whether or not you’re a good fit for each other.
