Every now and then, especially if you have long hair, curly hair, or the kind of hair extensions that you leave in overnight, you can end up with matted hair in seemingly impossible tangles.
If this has happened to you before, it’s good to know there are certain things that can be done to minimize the chances of waking up with one or more mats in your hair.
Sleep On Satin
Firstly, try sleeping on a satin pillowcase, with your hair tied up in a loose pony out of the way. This is an effortless yet effective way to prevent your hair from becoming tangled and snarled during the course of the night as you move around during sleep.
Get A Trim
Regular trimming helps with tangles: dead, rough split ends knot more easily. Snipping off your frayed ends also stops the risk of the split travelling any further up the hair shaft.
Finally, wash your hair like you’re in a shampoo commercial. Shampoo your hair slowly and gently, working up a good lather on your scalp, and letting the water and product run through your hair. This will minimise the risk of any potential damage caused by vigorous scrubbing, whilst letting you fulfil your shampoo commercial fantasies, because, let’s face it, we know you still have them…
If your hair has already reached the point of (seemingly) no return…
Put Your Products To Work
Start with wet hair. Apply some sort of detangling lotion, such as a detangling spray, deep conditioner, or try an oil such as argan, coconut, or olive oil. Really saturate your hair with the product. Pay attention to any instructions which specify the length of time required to achieve best results… sometimes it’s good to even leave it in overnight to really soften and loosen up the tangles.
Practice Patience
Gently begin to pull apart the knots with your fingers as much as you can. Next, using a wide-toothed comb, starting from the ends, start combing them out, holding your hair higher up with your other hand to prevent painful tugging on your scalp.
If there are still some stubborn knots that won’t come out, use small scissors to trim away these bits. Lastly, run your hair through with a fine-tooth comb, and rinse thoroughly. This should restore your hair to its original lush glory!
We advise daily attention and care to avoid matted hair.
