Getting Started with Hair Extensions

What are hair extensions and how do they work?

Hair extensions are strands or wefts of human or synthetic hair that attach to your natural hair to add length, volume, thickness, or colour instantly—without waiting for your hair to grow or using permanent colour treatments.

What Medusa extensions can do:

  • Add instant length (16-24 inches available)
  • Boost volume and fullness for thin or fine hair
  • Create highlights or colour without chemical damage
  • Cover thinning areas or add density
  • Experiment with different styles without commitment

Our extensions are made from 100% human Remy hair, which means they look completely natural, can be styled with heat tools, and blend seamlessly with your own hair.

Different types for different needs:From temporary clip-ins you apply yourself in minutes, to semi-permanent methods like tape-ins and wefts that last weeks—there's an extension solution for every lifestyle and goal.

What's the difference between clip-in, tape-in, microring, and weft extensions?

Medusa offers several extension methods, each suited to different needs:

Clip-In Extensions – Temporary extensions you apply and remove yourself in minutes using built-in clips. Perfect for occasional wear, special events, or trying extensions for the first time. Last 1+ year and require no professional maintenance.

Tape-In Extensions – Semi-permanent adhesive wefts worn continuously for 6-8 weeks. Lay flat for an invisible look, ideal for fine to medium hair. Need professional repositioning every 6-8 weeks as your hair grows. Can be reused 2-3 times.

Butterfly Weft Extensions – NEW! Ultra-lightweight wefts (50g) applied with microbeads/rings and featuring a thin strip that folds over the beads for a completely smooth, invisible finish. Even flatter and more invisible than tape extensions. Quick 30-minute installation, can be cut to size without shedding, and reusable. Perfect for fine or delicate hair that needs gentle volume. Repositioning needed every 6-8 weeks.

Microring Extensions – Individual strands attached with small metal rings - no glue or heat. Worn continuously for 2-6 months, best for medium to thick hair. Require tightening every 6-8 weeks. Great for active lifestyles.

Sewn-In Weft Extensions – Wefts sewn onto braided tracks in your hair. Best for thick hair wanting maximum volume and length. Worn for 2-6 months with repositioning needed every 6-8 weeks as braids grow out.

Quick guide:

  • Want flexibility? → Clip-in
  • Want invisible, lightweight? → Tape-in or Butterfly Weft
  • Have fine/delicate hair? → Butterfly Weft
  • Want no adhesive? → Microring or Butterfly Weft
  • Want maximum volume? → Sewn-in weft

Will hair extensions damage my hair?

No - when applied correctly and cared for properly, hair extensions will not damage your natural hair. Thousands of people wear extensions safely to grow out their hair or enjoy added length and volume without any problems.

What about hair loss from extensions?

You may have seen posts on TikTok claiming extensions caused hair loss. Here's the truth: Everyone naturally sheds 70-100 hairs per day. Without extensions, these hairs fall away unnoticed. With extensions, those naturally shed hairs get caught in the bonds, clips, or wefts. When you brush or remove your extensions, you see all that accumulated shedding at once - which looks alarming but is completely normal, not damage.

Actual damage only occurs from:

  • Extensions applied too tightly (causing pulling and tension)
  • Leaving permanent extensions in too long without repositioning
  • Poor removal technique (yanking or pulling)
  • Severe matting from inadequate care

How to prevent damage:

  • Choose the right method – Fine/thin hair suits clip-ins or tape-ins best. Avoid heavy wefts on delicate hair
  • Ensure comfortable fit – Extensions should never feel tight or painful
  • Follow wear schedules – Reposition tape-ins every 6-8 weeks, microrings/wefts every 2-6 months
  • Brush gently – Start from ends, work upward. Use a soft bristle or extension brush
  • Keep clean – Prevent buildup that causes matting
  • Remove properly – Use correct techniques (see "How do I remove my hair extensions?")

If extensions ever feel tight or uncomfortable, this is a warning sign. Properly applied extensions should be pain-free. Contact us if you need advice on the best method for your hair type.

Do hair extensions look natural?

Yes! When properly matched and applied, quality hair extensions are completely undetectable. People wear Medusa extensions every day without anyone knowing.

What makes extensions look natural:

Quality hair matters – Our 100% Remy hair has intact cuticles that reflect light naturally and move like your own hair, unlike synthetic alternatives that look shiny or artificial.

Color matching is key – Choose a shade within 1-2 shades of your natural color. If you're unsure, use our colour match service where we'll help you find your perfect match from photos.

Proper blending – For permanent methods, having a hairdresser trim and blend the extensions with your natural hair creates seamless layers. For clip-ins, positioning them correctly under your top layer conceals the attachments.

Right method for your hair – Fine hair does best with lightweight options like Butterfly Wefts or tape-ins that lay flat. Thicker hair can handle any method without bulking.

The key is choosing extensions that match your hair's color, texture, and density. Thousands of our customers wear extensions daily with complete confidence - no one can tell the difference.

How much do hair extensions cost?

Clip-In Full Head Sets: $200–$415Tape-In Extensions: $155–$770+ (varies by length and quantity - 20pc to 80pc)Butterfly Wefts: From $195 (20" length, more options coming soon)Sewn-In Wefts: From $190

Choosing the Right Extensions

Which colour extensions should I choose?

Choose extensions that match your natural hair within 1-2 shades for the most natural, undetectable blend. The colour doesn't need to be a perfect match - slight variations actually help extensions blend more naturally.

Need help choosing?

  • Use our colour guide to compare shades
  • Send photos of your hair in natural light via our colour match service and we'll recommend the best match
  • Request custom blending. We can mix 2-3 colours to create your perfect shade

How many grams/how much hair do I need?

The amount depends on your natural hair thickness and your goals:

50g (half head) – Adds volume only. Best if you already have length and just want extra fullness.

100g (full head) – Standard amount for most people. Adds both volume and length to thin-medium density hair that has some existing length.

150-200g (thick full head) – Needed if you have:

  • Very short hair
  • Thick or dense natural hair
  • Blunt-cut hair (no layers)

Check individual product pages for specific weights per pack. Still unsure? Contact us and we'll help you calculate exactly how much you need based on your hair type and goals.

How long does my hair need to be?

Your natural hair should be at least 10cm (4 inches) long to properly conceal extension attachments and create a natural blend.

If your hair is shorter than 10cm:You'll need a professional hairdresser to trim and blend the extensions with layers using razor-cutting techniques after application. This creates a seamless transition between your short natural hair and the extensions.

Why length matters:Shorter hair may struggle to hide clips, tape, or bonds, making extensions visible. The minimum 10cm length ensures attachments stay hidden and extensions blend naturally.

What is Remy hair and why does it matter?

Remy hair is premium human hair where all strands run in the same natural direction from root to tip with cuticles intact and aligned - just like hair grows on your head.

This alignment is crucial because it prevents tangling, matting, and friction between strands. Remy hair stays smooth, silky, and manageable throughout its lifespan, while non-Remy hair (with cuticles facing random directions) quickly becomes knotted and unmanageable.

All Medusa extensions use 100% ethically sourced Indian Remy hair, ensuring your extensions look natural, last longer, and can be styled with heat tools just like your own hair.

Where does Medusa source its hair from?

All Medusa extensions (excluding Partner Products) are made with 100% Indian Remy hair that is ethically sourced.

Why Indian Remy hair?Indian hair is prized for its natural strength, versatility, and ability to blend seamlessly with most hair types. It holds styles well and responds beautifully to heat styling and colouring.

Ethically sourced:Our hair is sourced through ethical channels, ensuring fair treatment and compensation for donors.

Can I get custom-made extensions?

Yes! We create custom extensions tailored to your exact specifications, perfect for rare colour blends, extra volume, or specific lengths not in our standard range.

What can be customised:

  • Colour blends (mix 2-3 shades with percentage ratios)
  • Weight/quantity
  • Length
  • Extension type (Clip-In, Tape, Weft, Halo)

How to order:Browse our custom made section, choose your extension type, length and weight, then specify your colour blend in the cart comments. For example: "50% Natural Blonde 24#, 25% Medium Brown 6#, 25% Light Warm Brown 8#"

Delivery time: Approximately 3-4 weeks worldwide

Installation & Application

Can I install hair extensions myself?

Clip-In Extensions: Yes, completely DIY-friendly. Anyone can apply them at home in 5-10 minutes—just section your hair, open the clips, position near your roots, and snap closed. No special tools or skills needed.

Tape-In, Microring & Sewn-In Weft Extensions: Professional application strongly recommended. These methods require:

  • Precise sectioning and placement technique
  • Special tools (extension pliers for microrings, needle/thread for wefts)
  • Correct tension to avoid discomfort or damage
  • Proper blending and trimming for invisible results

Incorrect DIY application of permanent methods can cause visible extensions, uneven weight distribution, pulling, or damage to your natural hair.

You'll also need professional help for:

  • Repositioning as your hair grows (every 6-8 weeks)
  • Safe removal
  • Blending and trimming

If you're new to extensions, start with clip-ins to experience how extensions feel with zero commitment before investing in permanent methods.

How do I apply extensions?

Application depends on the extension type:

Clip-In Extensions – DIY-friendly. Section your hair horizontally, tease the roots slightly for grip, open the clips, position the weft close to your scalp, and snap clips closed. Takes 5-10 minutes. Watch our video tutorial.

Tape-In Extensions – Wash hair with clarifying shampoo (no conditioner), dry completely, then sandwich thin sections of your natural hair between two adhesive tape wefts. Wait 24 hours before washing. Professional application recommended.

Butterfly Wefts – Applied using microbeads/rings threaded onto small sections of hair, then the weft's thin strip folds over the beads for a smooth finish. Professional application recommended. Takes approximately 30 minutes for a full head.

Sewn-In Wefts – Your natural hair is braided into cornrows or a beaded track, then wefts are sewn onto the braids using a needle and thread. Professional application required.

Need more help? See our full Application Guides with detailed tutorials for each extension method.

Do I need a professional stylist?

Clip-In Extensions: No—these are designed for easy at-home application. With a bit of practice, anyone can apply them in 5-10 minutes.

Tape-In, Butterfly Wefts & Sewn-In Wefts: Professional stylist strongly recommended for best results. These methods require precise sectioning, proper tension, and blending techniques that are difficult to achieve on your own.

Can a friend help instead? If you have a friend with extension experience and know-how, they can assist with application. However, for the most natural-looking, long-lasting results, a professional stylist is always your best option.

Why professional matters:

  • Proper placement ensures extensions are invisible and comfortable
  • Correct tension prevents damage to your natural hair
  • Professional blending and trimming creates seamless results
  • Stylists can identify the best method for your specific hair type

How long does installation take?

Installation time varies depending on the extension method and how much hair you're adding:

Clip-In Extensions: 5-10 minutes (DIY at home)

Tape-In Extensions: 30-60 minutes for a full head (professional application)

Butterfly Wefts: 30-45 minutes for a full head (professional application)

Sewn-In Wefts: 2-4 hours depending on the technique and amount of hair (professional application)

Factors that affect timing:

  • Amount of hair being applied (50g vs 200g)
  • Your stylist's experience level
  • Whether colour blending or custom cutting is needed
  • Complexity of placement for your desired look

Styling & Daily Use

Can I use heat tools on my hair extensions?

Yes! Medusa extensions are made from 100% human Remy hair, so you can use straighteners, curling irons, blow dryers, and wands just like you would on your natural hair.

Important heat styling tips:

  • Always use a heat protectant spray to prevent damage and extend the life of your extensions
  • Keep heat settings moderate (150-180°C / 300-360°F)—excessive heat will reduce how long your extensions last
  • Avoid the bonds/attachments – Keep heat tools away from tape, microrings, or sewn areas as direct heat can melt adhesive or damage attachment points
  • Less is more – Your extensions won't produce natural oils like your own hair, so frequent heat styling will dry them out faster

For clip-in extensions: You have even more flexibility since you can remove them to style separately, which makes curling or straightening easier and protects your natural hair from excess heat exposure.

The same quality Remy hair that makes your extensions tangle-free and manageable also means they hold curls and styles beautifully, just treat them with care and they'll stay looking gorgeous wear after wear.

Can I curl or straighten my hair extensions?

Yes! Medusa extensions are made from 100% human Remy hair, so you can curl, straighten, and style them with heat tools just like your natural hair.

Heat styling tips:

  • Always use a heat protectant spray
  • Keep temperature moderate (150-180°C / 300-360°F)
  • Avoid direct heat on attachment points (clips, tape, bonds)
  • Remember extensions don't produce natural oils, so limit excessive heat to prevent dryness

Your extensions will hold curls and styles beautifully - just treat them with care and they'll stay looking gorgeous through multiple wears.

How do I style my extensions?

Style your Medusa extensions exactly like your natural hair - they're 100% human Remy hair, so they respond to all the same styling techniques.

Styling options:

  • Heat styling: Curl, straighten, or wave with your usual hot tools
  • Updos & ponytails: Wear your hair up (ensure clips/bonds are concealed)
  • Braids & plaits: Extensions hold braided styles beautifully
  • Air-dry: Let them dry naturally for effortless texture

Quick styling tips:

  • Brush gently from ends to roots before styling
  • Use heat protectant when using hot tools
  • Blend extensions with your natural hair using a curling iron or straightener for seamless results
  • Avoid applying heavy styling products directly to attachment points

Can I wear hair extensions every day?

Clip-In Extensions: Yes, you can wear them all day comfortably. However, it's recommended to remove them before bed to prevent tangling and maintain their longevity.

Tape-In, Butterfly Wefts & Sewn-In Wefts: These are semi-permanent extensions designed to be worn 24/7, day and night, for weeks at a time. You sleep, shower, and go about your daily life with them in.

Comfort check:Extensions should always feel comfortable. If you experience pulling, itching, or discomfort at any point, this indicates improper application or that they need repositioning. Properly applied extensions should feel like your natural hair.

How do I sleep with extensions?

Clip-In Extensions: Remove them before bed to prevent tangling and extend their lifespan.

Tape-In, Butterfly Wefts & Sewn-In Wefts: These are worn 24/7, including while sleeping. Follow these tips for best results:

Sleeping tips:

  • Tie hair in a loose, low braid or ponytail to prevent tangling
  • Use a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and frizz
  • Never go to bed with wet hair—always dry extensions before sleeping
  • Avoid tight buns or high ponytails that create tension on attachments

Morning routine: Gently brush through your extensions starting from the ends and working up to the roots.

Can I swim with my hair extensions?

Yes, you can swim with your extensions, but salt water and chlorine will shorten their lifespan if not properly managed.

Important after-swim care:

  • Rinse your extensions immediately with fresh, clean water
  • Never let salt or chlorinated water dry in your hair
  • Shampoo and condition as soon as possible after swimming
  • Apply a deep conditioning treatment to restore moisture

To minimise damage:

  • Wet your hair with fresh water before entering the pool/ocean (saturates hair so it absorbs less chlorine/salt)
  • Wear a swimming cap for maximum protection
  • Consider wearing clip-ins instead for beach/pool days—remove them before swimming

The key is never letting chlorine or salt water sit in your extensions. Quick rinsing makes all the difference.

How long will my extensions last?

Extension lifespan depends on your care routine and lifestyle. Here's what to expect:

Clip-In Extensions: 1+ year with proper care. These last longest because they're not worn daily and require less frequent washing.

Tape-In Extensions: The hair itself can be reused 2-3 times. You'll need repositioning every 6-8 weeks as your natural hair grows, with new tape applied each time.

Butterfly Wefts: Can be reused multiple times with proper care. Repositioning needed every 6-8 weeks.

Sewn-In Wefts: Average lifespan of 2-6 months, though some customers achieve up to a year following our care advice.

What affects longevity:

  • How well you maintain them (proper washing, brushing, product use)
  • Heat styling frequency
  • Exposure to chlorine, salt water, or harsh conditions
  • Following repositioning schedules for semi-permanent methods

With excellent care, many customers exceed these timeframes significantly.

Can I perm my hair extensions?

It's not recommended, but yes, you can perm your extensions. Be aware it will significantly reduce their lifespan.

Why we don't recommend it:

Our Remy hair has already been through processing before you receive it. The hair starts as dark brown, then for most shades (especially lighter than medium brown) it's:

  1. Bleached back to blonde
  2. Dyed to the required shade
  3. For wavy textures, permed to create the wave pattern

These processes are already quite harsh on the hair, so additional perming will further compromise the hair's condition and durability.

If you do perm:

  • Use a professional stylist experienced with extensions
  • Expect shortened lifespan
  • Follow up with intensive conditioning treatments
  • Consider ordering a texture closer to your desired result instead

Better alternative: Choose our wavy or custom-made extensions in the texture you want, rather than perming straight hair.

What products should I use on my hair extensions?

Use quality, sulphate-free hair care products to extend the life of your extensions and keep them looking their best.

Why sulphate-free matters:Sodium laureth sulphate (a common foaming agent) strips moisture from extensions, causing them to become dry, dull, and tangled. Sulphate-free shampoo keeps extensions soft and manageable.

What to use:

  • Sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner (essential)
  • Leave-in treatments for moisture
  • Heat protectant spray before styling
  • Lightweight oils or serums for shine (avoid roots/attachment points)

For clip-ins: Product choice is less critical since they're not worn daily and washed less frequently, but sulphate-free is still recommended.

Care & Maintenance

How do I wash my hair extensions?

Clip-In Extensions: Store by hanging on a clip hanger (like a skirt hanger) to prevent tangling and keep them ready to wear. This also makes it easy to pre-style them before application.

Alternative storage methods:

  • In the original packaging or a silk/satin bag
  • Laid flat in a drawer (brush first and ensure they're completely dry)
  • On a wig stand or hanger

Storage tips:

  • Always brush extensions before storing
  • Ensure they're completely dry—never store damp extensions
  • Keep away from direct sunlight and heat
  • Store in a cool, dry place

For semi-permanent extensions (tape-in, butterfly wefts): If you're reusing them, clean thoroughly, brush gently, and hang or store flat until ready for reapplication.

Bonus: Pre-styling your clip-ins while they're on the hanger makes application much easier and faster!

How often should I wash them?

Clip-In Extensions: Every 15-20 wears, or when you notice product buildup. Since they're not worn daily, they need washing far less frequently than your natural hair.

Tape-In, Butterfly Wefts & Sewn-In Wefts: 2-3 times per week, or as needed based on your lifestyle and activity level.

Factors that affect washing frequency:

  • How oily your natural scalp is
  • Product usage (dry shampoo, styling products)
  • Exercise and sweating
  • Environmental factors (humidity, pollution)

Important: Overwashing strips moisture from extensions and shortens their lifespan. Wash only when necessary. Many people find their extensions stay cleaner longer than their natural hair because they don't produce oils from the scalp.

Tip: Use dry shampoo on your natural roots between washes to extend time between washing your extensions.

Can I colour or tone my extensions?

It's best to choose a colour closely matched to your hair so colouring isn't needed, however the extensions are 100% human Remy hair and can be coloured.

Important to understand:

Our Remy hair has already been heavily processed. The hair starts as dark brown, then for most shades (particularly lighter than medium brown):

  1. Bleached back to blonde
  2. Dyed to the required shade
  3. For wavy hair, permed to create the wave

These processes are harsh on the hair, which is why we don't recommend further bleaching.

If you need to colour or tone:

  • Best option: Use semi-permanent dye, much gentler on the hair
  • Going darker: You can use permanent colour, but it will reduce how long your extensions last
  • Always perform a strand test first on a small section

Important disclaimer: Medusa will not refund products that have been toned or coloured resulting in an undesirable effect or hair condition. Colouring is done entirely at the buyer's risk, and Medusa will not be held accountable for results.

Better alternative: Use our Colour Match Service to find your perfect shade before ordering.

Longevity & Lifespan

Can I reuse clip in extensions?

Absolutely! Clip-in extensions are designed to be reused repeatedly—that's one of their biggest advantages. With proper care, they can last 1+ year of regular use.

Why clip-ins are so reusable:

  • Remove them daily, so they're not exposed to constant wear
  • Wash them far less frequently (every 15-20 wears)
  • No chemical processing from attachment methods
  • Easy to maintain and store properly

To maximise reusability:

  • Brush gently before and after each wear
  • Wash only when needed with sulphate-free products
  • Store on a clip hanger to prevent tangling
  • Avoid excessive heat styling
  • Keep away from harsh chemicals and chlorine

Many customers get well over a year of use from their clip-ins, making them the most cost-effective extension option long-term.

How often do tape extensions need repositioning?

Every 6-8 weeks. As your natural hair grows, the tape bonds move away from your scalp and need to be removed, repositioned closer to the roots, and reapplied with fresh tape.

What happens at a repositioning appointment:

  • Your stylist removes the existing tape extensions
  • Cleans any residue from your hair and the extensions
  • Applies new tape to the wefts
  • Repositions them back at your roots

This maintenance is essential to keep your extensions looking natural, sitting flat, and staying secure. Leaving them too long without repositioning can cause discomfort, visible bonds, and potential damage to your natural hair.

Cost: Repositioning appointments typically cost less than the initial installation since the hair is reused.

What affects extension lifespan?

Several factors determine extension lifespan:

Care and maintenance:

  • Using sulphate-free, quality hair products
  • Proper washing technique (gentle, not too frequent)
  • Regular brushing to prevent tangling and matting
  • Deep conditioning treatments to maintain moisture

Heat styling:

  • Excessive heat dries out extensions faster
  • Always use heat protectant
  • Lower temperature settings extend lifespan

Environmental exposure:

  • Chlorine and salt water significantly shorten lifespan
  • UV exposure can fade colour and dry out hair
  • Humidity and harsh weather conditions

Lifestyle factors:

  • How often you wear them (clip-ins worn occasionally last longer)
  • Exercise and sweating frequency
  • Product buildup from styling products

Repositioning schedules:

  • Semi-permanent methods must be repositioned on time (every 6-8 weeks)
  • Leaving extensions too long causes tension and damage

Hair quality:

  • Remy hair lasts significantly longer than non-Remy
  • Proper initial application by a professional ensures longevity

Important to note: Extensions that are well-maintained, protected from harsh conditions, and repositioned on schedule will always outlast those that aren't!

Removal & Reapplication

How do I remove my extensions?

Clip-In Extensions: Bend clips backwards to open and slide out of your hair. Quick and easy DIY removal.

Butterfly Wefts & Microring Extensions: Use extension pliers to squeeze the microring back into the open position, then gently slide out of hair.

Sewn-In Wefts: Use small scissors to carefully snip along the sewn thread, then slide the weft out of your hair. Take care not to cut your natural hair.

Tape-In Extensions:

  1. Apply our tape hair remover to each tape pair
  2. Leave for one minute
  3. Gently peel the tapes apart
  4. If any residue remains, dust a little cornflour (yes, cornflour!) onto each section
  5. Comb through with a fine-toothed comb
  6. Shampoo hair twice and condition

Read our detailed guide on removing tape-ins safely at home.

Professional removal: For semi-permanent methods, you can have a stylist remove your extensions if you prefer, especially if you're planning to have new ones applied immediately after.

Can I remove extensions myself?

Clip-In Extensions: Yes, absolutely. These are designed for easy DIY removal—simply bend the clips open and slide out.

Tape-In Extensions: Yes, with the right products. You'll need our tape hair remover and careful technique. Follow our step-by-step guide for safe at-home removal.

Butterfly Wefts & Microring Extensions: Possible with extension pliers, but requires care to avoid pulling or damaging your natural hair. Professional removal recommended if you're unsure.

Sewn-In Wefts: Can be done yourself with small scissors, but you must be extremely careful not to cut your natural hair. Professional removal is safest.

When to see a professional:

  • If you're nervous about the process
  • When removing for the first time
  • If you plan to have new extensions applied immediately after
  • If extensions are matted or tangled

Important: Never yank, pull, or force extensions out. Improper removal can damage your natural hair.

Should I give my hair a break between extensions?

No, there's no need for a break between extensions if they've been properly applied and removed without damage to your natural hair.

Why breaks aren't necessary:

  • Properly applied extensions don't harm healthy hair
  • Your natural hair continues its normal growth cycle with extensions in
  • Correct removal technique leaves hair undamaged

Most people prefer continuous wear: Many clients have their old extensions removed and new ones applied on the same day, so their hair continues looking fabulous without interruption.

When you might need a break:

  • If your natural hair is damaged, brittle, or over-processed
  • After incorrect application that caused tension or pulling
  • If you're experiencing scalp sensitivity or irritation
  • To give chemically treated hair time to recover

Signs your hair needs a rest:

  • Excessive breakage or shedding
  • Thinning around attachment areas
  • Scalp tenderness or discomfort
  • Hair feels weak or brittle

If your hair and scalp are healthy and extensions have been applied properly, you can continue wearing them back-to-back indefinitely.
